Today is Monday June 21st, the official first day of Summer, but here in the Seattle area it feels like the first day of Autumn. We have yet to hit 75 degrees this year, it’s getting a bit tiresome. Typically on a Monday morning I go to the gym but this week Peter is on vacation so more time for me to eat, drink and be merry! With out the gym and without a staging project I wake up and wonder what I shall do today?
I start by not enjoying my coffee, maybe I’m over coffee? Lately the coffee no matter brand just doesn’t taste good to me, is it time to move on? This after all is a terrible thing to say in the Coffee Capital of the world, Seattle. But I think the time has come to try just having Green tea and see how I feel, I do enjoy Green tea!
So again what to do today? For starters I jar up an can the Strawberry Jam I randomly made on saturday. Late friday evening on an Ice Cream run to Metropolitan Market I came across a 1/2 flat of local Skagit County Strawberries! They were small and perfect, so Strawberry Jam was inevitable. So I made the jam saturday but never had the time to jar it up until now. So on this dreary Monday morning the first day of summer I have jarred up the small batch of Strawberry Jam, so even though it doesn’t look like summer, this little project will make me think of Summer when we open these jars this Autumn and Winter.
Yesterday afternoon I watched “Julie & Julia” again, not sure how many times I have watched this movie now but I love it. I was inspired again by it so today since the weather is not exactly warm and gardening just doesn’t sound fun, I pulled out “Mastering the Art of French Cooking” and just thumbed thru pages. I came across the Cake and Desserts, and just so happened to have all the ingredients on hand for the Gateau A L’Orange, or Orange Spongecake! It is currently in the oven and the Orange aroma is wafting thru the house, and it’s taking me away from the dreary first day of Summer and plopping me down in a little flat in Paris! Now if I could only have my glass of wine with Lunch!
While the cake was cooling I went out and thinned the Radishes in the garden It’s very important to do this but at the same time it causes pain. I always hate to throw out these ‘rejected’ starts and what if they were to grow into better produce than the ones you have saved? I guess this is just the price you pay while gardening.
After getting the cake all frosted and sampling a slice, I got the Table Linens from last nights dinner party all starched, ironed and put away ready for next time they are needed!
40 Minutes of Yoga, helps to make one not feel so guilty for eating a slice of cake at 1:30 in the afternoon.
Tonight’s dinner is a selection of leftovers from this weekends meals. There will be a bit of leftover Zucchini Cake (#1 Searched recipe in Australia, according to Today.ninemsn.au) A bite or two of leftover Moussaka from yesterday and then a nice fresh Green Salad, and then of course Gateau A L’Orange!
